The Calving Season

From December through March, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest congregate on the mineral-rich short-grass plains of Ndutu to give birth. The calving is remarkably synchronized — at its peak, up to 8,000 calves are born each day in one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles.

Newborns take their first wobbly steps within minutes of birth, a survival imperative on the open plains. The abundance of vulnerable young draws lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and jackals in extraordinary numbers, creating non-stop predator-prey drama.

The Ndutu plains offer unobstructed 360-degree views, making wildlife viewing and photography exceptional in every direction. After the short rains, the plains transform into a lush green carpet — a dramatic contrast to the dry northern landscapes.

Why Here

The Ndutu Advantage

The southern Serengeti plains during calving season offer a unique combination of open landscapes, wildlife density, and photographic potential.

Predator-Prey Theatre

The abundance of newborn calves attracts predators from across the ecosystem. Cheetahs stalk the open plains, lion prides lie in ambush, and hyena clans operate around the clock.

Open Plains Photography

The short-grass plains of Ndutu provide unmatched visibility. Wide-angle herd shots, intimate calving moments, dramatic storm-light, and lush green landscapes after the rains — all in a single drive.

Ngorongoro Gateway

Ndutu sits at the boundary of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Combine your calving-season experience with a half-day descent into the Ngorongoro Crater — one of Africa’s most rewarding day trips.
