The Mara River Crossings

The Mara River crossings are the single most dramatic and photographed event of the entire Great Migration cycle. From July through October, over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra gather along the riverbanks, waiting for the right moment to plunge into crocodile-infested waters.

Crossings are unpredictable — herds may amass for hours or even days, only to suddenly stampede en masse. The chaos, the spray, the crocodiles — it is raw, unscripted nature at its most powerful.

Our camp’s position near multiple crossing points gives you the best possible chance of witnessing this spectacle, often with very few other vehicles in sight.

Why Here

The Northern Serengeti Advantage

Kogatende is remote, exclusive, and wild — offering an intensity of experience that the more-visited central Serengeti cannot match during migration season.

Peak Predator Action

The convergence of millions of prey animals draws the Serengeti’s top predators north. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas are all present in high numbers, creating constant predator-prey encounters.

Fewer Vehicles

The remote northern Serengeti sees far fewer camps and vehicles than the central or southern regions. This translates to a more private, immersive, and undisturbed wildlife experience.

Photography Paradise

River-crossing action shots with dramatic spray, golden-hour predator portraits on dry plains, dust-cloud herd photography against moody skies — Kogatende is a photographer’s dream.
